Bats Come Alive in 9-4 Win at CSF

FULLERTON, Calif. -- Houston Baseball rebounded with a nice offensive showing and a 9-4 victory Saturday to even the weekend series at No. 13 Cal State Fullerton at Goodwin Field.

Houston improved to 3-2 on the year, while Cal State Fullerton fell to 1-5.


  • Drew Minter doubled twice in back-to-back at-bats (2nd/5th).
  • Aaron Fletcher tossed a career-long 6.0 innings, surpassing his previous high of 5.0 innings in his last start vs. Holy Cross (2/17/18).
  • Connor Hollis has a hit in all five games this season.
  • Houston hit four doubles (Minter x2, Padgett, Lockhart).
  • Dating back to the 2017 season, Cooper Coldiron has now reached base in 14 straight games.

Drew Minter doubled twice and drove in an RBI, while scoring two runs to lead the offense. Cooper Coldiron also tallied two hits, two RBI and scored a run. Lael Lockhart Jr. had two RBI, while Grayson Padgett, Joe Davis, Rey Fuentes III each had one.

Starter Aaron Fletcher moved to 2-0 on the year with a career-long 6.0 innings pitched in just his second career start. The southpaw struck out five, allowed just two earned runs on five hits with two walks.

He handed the ball over to senior reliever Kyle Ott, who tossed 1.2 shutout innings, allowing one walk, one hit and registered one strikeout. Sophomore Lael Lockhart Jr. made his pitching debut and tossed the final 1.1 innings, allowing one unearned run on one walk, two hits with one strikeout.

1st | Houston jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, highlighted by a two-run double by Lael Lockhart Jr., who plated Drew Minter and Joe Davis, who each walked. Rey Fuentes III added and RBI-single down the right field line to plate Lockhart to make it a three-run game.

2nd | The Cougars added to their lead in the second with a pair of runs. Kyle Lovelace reached on a fielding error, stole second and came around to score on a Minter RBI-double. Davis then followed with an RBI-single, plating Minter for the 5-0 lead.

Cal State Fullerton scratched across a run in the latter half of the inning following a leadoff walk, single, sacrifice bunt and RBI-groundout to make it a 5-1 game.

5th | Houston tacked on another two runs in the top of the fifth on a two-out, two-run single off the bat of Cooper Coldiron. He plated Davis, who reached on a fielder's choice and Connor Hollis, who singled.

Cal State Fullerton added a run in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out RBI-double down the left field line to trim the Cougars' lead by five at 7-2.

7th | The Titans take advantage of a leadoff single, walk and defensive miscue by Houston to score their third run of the game to make it 7-3 in the seventh.

8th | The Cougars got their runs back in the eighth on three hits. Coldiron led off the frame with an infield single, advanced to third on an executed hit-and-run by Jared Triolo's single into center. Triolo stole second and forced an errant throw, scoring Coldiron and Grayson Padgett came up big with an RBI-double into left center, scoring Triolo for the 9-3 lead and the 10th Cougar hit of the game.

Cal State Fullerton used a two-out walk, double and passed ball to make it 9-4 after eight.

Houston and Cal State Fullerton will wrap up the three-game series at 2 pm CT Sunday at Goodwin Field.
The Cougars will return to Houston to host Texas Southern at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Schroeder Park before heading over to Minute Maid Park to participate in the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic, beginning with a matchup with Kentucky at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
